The Office of Sustainability (formerly known as Chula Vista CLEAN) was established in 2007 in order to help find new and adaptive solutions to environmental problems impacting Chula Vista, California and the surrounding region. The group is a collaborative effort between the City of Chula Vista's environmental divisions and local stakeholders which include businesses and community groups. Office of Sustainability’s main focus has been on creating a long-term climate change action plan, achieving a zero waste stream, and increasing public education of the city’s environmental programs. With equal input from the city of Chula Vista and community leaders, the group helps to foster an open dialogue with the public and business community on ways they can help create a sustainable Chula Vista for years to come.

Conservation Section

As part of the Economic Development Department, the Conservation Section’s mission is to implement innovative and effective programs focused on improving the sustainability, health, and equity within municipal operations and throughout the community for the benefit of current and future generations. The Conservation Section acts as the City's lead for energy and water conservation, climate action planning, and healthy community initiatives actively collaborating with civic groups, business organizations, environmental and health advocates, academic institutions, and other public agencies.

Environmental Services Section

The Environmental Services Division is responsible for pursuing waste management strategies that emphasize more efficient use of resources through waste minimization/reduction, reuse, recycling and environmentally sound disposal strategies.

Today there is growing concern about climate change and how it could impact our environment and our lives. Preventing waste and recycling can significantly reduce greenhouse gases produced during the mining, transporting and processing of raw materials for the manufacturing of goods.  It is wasteful to throw away products after a single use.  We can choose to significantly reduce waste and greenhouse gases by purchasing and reusing products made from recycled materials.

Internships and service learning opportunities are available throughout the year. Interns are typically assigned activities that promote resource conservation and environmental protection including public outreach activities such as special events and school presentations throughout the South Bay Community.
